Gods, Cults, and Rituals

Summer school students who are still considering interesting courses should take a closer look at Gods, Cults, and Rituals being offered in Section A6 (5/28-6/20 M, Tu, Th 6:00pm-9: 40pm). Professor Patrick McCarty will introduce students to the traditional theoretical approaches used in Anthropology to study religious institutions, symbols, and practices. This subfield has experienced a resurgence and renewal of interest in the past 5 years. Ethnographic material will survey religious groups in the US and around the world, exploring through lecture, film, and current readings how cultures adapt to their larger social worlds. Special attention will be given to current global and national events and the impact of religion in our daily lives.
