Volunteer Internship
Opportunity Volunteer internships are one way both to do good in the world and get the kind of experience that employers expect; often they also provide connections and networks for getting a paid job afterwards. CONTACT Community Helplines provide free and confidential assistance for people in crisis, people needing help with addiction, and senior citizens seeking reassurance. CONTACT volunteers are trained in "active listening" and in providing appropriate referrals. Volunteers first receive six to eight weeks of training (two hours for one evening each week) and then three apprenticeship shifts with an experienced volunteer. When the apprentice volunteer is confortable handling calls alone, he or she generally takes two four hour shifts a month between 7 am and 11 pm, although this is adjustable. Both the training sessions and the hotlines are located in Cherry Hill. Course credit may be available either through the internship seminar run by the Career Center or through Professor Wood in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice. If you are interested, contact former Rutgers student Bree Donovan, Volunteer Coordinator, at 856-795-5073 or at volunteercoordinator@contacthelplines.org.
