Course Goals

      A major goal of the course is to provide students with a solid scholarly basis for understanding contemporary events and sociocultural patterns in Latin America. To achieve this, we shall examine the environmental, historical, economic, political and sociocultural backgrounds of the people in the region. In addition, we shall consider the impact of the contemporary international order on the region.

Course Requirements

 

1. There will be two short writing assignments.


a) The first will be an analysis of a current news article about Latin America which is related to the issues raised by Rigoberta Menchu. Write 1-2 pages summarizing the article and discussing its relationship to the issues or problems raised in her book Due Sep. 28


b) The second assignment will be a museum report based on the exhibits in the Mesoamerican Hall at the University Museum, University of Penn., Phila. Write a paper of two-three pages, typed, double-spaced with reasonable margins on two art objects or artifacts from the Mesoamerican exhibit and one from the River of Gold: Precolumbian Treasures from Sitio Conte exhibit. The paper should include (a) a detailed description of the objects (site, size, material, shape, etc.); how it is displayed; and (b) what the significance of the object is in Precolumbian culture. This paper will be due Dec. 3

 

2. There will be a midterm examination, which will be Oct. 24 and a final examination.

 

Class participation is expected and will count in your grade.
