Police and Policing is an introductory course that addresses the role that police officers play in the Criminal Justice System. The course is designed to highlight the structure and history of police; the nature of police work; police discretion and misconduct; and different types of policing strategies.

Course grades

 

·  Exams  (60%)

There are four multiple-choice exams. The exams are not cumulative but will be based on the information proceeding each exam.

 

·  Final exam (5%)

There will be final exam for this class. The format for the exam will consist of multiple choice, fill-in the blanks, and/or essay questions that pertain to all of the information presented, including any guest lecturers and videos.

 

·  Position paper  (20%)

Each student will complete a paper on a relevant topic for Policing in the 21st Century. The double-spaced paper should be in APA style, at least 5 pages in length (but no more than 10), and is expected to be based in current research and support the writer’s opinions.

 

·  Classroom Participation (15%)

The course is not intended to be solely a lecture format. Every student is expected to actively participate in classroom discussions. Therefore, each student should be prepared to discuss the topics scheduled to be covered.

 

·  Extra Credit

With prior instructor permission, a student may receive points towards their overall course average by submitting an extra assignment assigned by the instructor.

 

Class rules

 

·  Attendance

The requirement to attend class should not be taken lightly. Attendance is considered an important part of the course. Excessive unexcused absences will negatively impact on one’s classroom participation grade as well. 

 

·  Make-ups

Students who have scheduling conflicts are expected to make arrangements with three instructor in advance, especially those impacting on the exam schedule. Students who miss an exam due to last minute problems must contact the instructor within 24 hours. (Note: Documentation may be requested.)

 

·  Cheating/Plagiarism

The penalties for this type of behavior are clearly outlined in the University’s Student guide/manual. This behavior will not be tolerated. Any student committing such an offense will face severe sanctions.
