SOME OTHER GOOD INFO TO KNOW

POST OFFICE:

It's two blocks from campus at 401 Market (757-0341). It's at the back of the Federal Court Building.

GROCERIES:

Food shopping in Camden is a tad sparse, but here's a few local stores where you can grab a gallon of milk or box of cereal:

Candy Cash and Carry (6:30-6:30pm, 307 Market Street, 966-7085). Don't let the name mislead you into thinking this is a candy shop. It's among the best shopping close to the campus. In addition to canned goods, convenience foods, beans, rice, some meats, he has a fairly decent collection of frozen items, including fresh ice cream. If you let him know, the owner will stock requested items.

CVS pharmacy (m-f 7-7:30, 10-4 Sat & Sun, 525 Mickle, 963-3160). About a block from the Rand Transportation Center, this new facility is revolutionary for Camden. The food selection is only moderate, but this isn't a supermarket. I've compared some of their prices and they're good, especially since CVS is actually a "nice" place to shop. They're definitely worth a looksy for anyone who shops in Camden.

Northgate Supermarket (M-F 7-7pm, Sat 8-6, Sun 8-4, 963-7545): They're at 7th and Linden (on the other side of the bridge, bottom floor of the tall apartment building). They have a limited supply of fresh fruits and vegetables (potatos, yams, onions, bananas, plantains, oranges, apples, and some other goodies). They even carry 1% milk. Fairly decent selection of canned goods, cereals, and beans. Due to having to cross under the bridge through the tunnel, you should complete all your shopping during daylight hours, so head over during the afternoon or hit one of the markets on this side of the bridge.

Rite Aid Pharmacy (M-F 7-7pm, Sat 8-6, Sun 10-4, 2 S. Broadway, 541-9294). Not the best food selection, but you can find milk, munchies, and convenience foods there.

Rutgers Convenience Store: this little store is located inside the campus cafeteria and has the same hours. You can grab milk and other dairy products. They have a variety of convenience foods, and will stock special order stuff. I understand their Tyson buffalo wings are a very popular item; score 'em and toss 'em in your microwave and it's dinner time.

Seven & Seven Food Market (7:30am-7pm). They're about eight blocks away at 607 Broadway.

Viral's Food Market (M-F 11am-6pm, weekends 2pm-6pm). A half block away at 119 3rd (963-1122).

The Philadelphia Story: If you're "sans wheels," the shopping is actually much more accessible in Philadelphia. Hop on the Patco Subway and get off at 8th and Market (the first stop on the Philly side). The Gallery mall is there (three words: lots of shopping!). The mall has a number of grocery vendors, mostly right around the Patco station. Tons of fresh fruits and vegetables and meats, too. Make sure you get a pretzel at Aunt Annie's while you're there. If you like quick Japanese food, there's a great place to get teriyaki chicken and tempura over near SEPTA train station for right at five bucks (the SEPTA train station is at the opposite side of the mall from the PATCO station). The farmer's market is another great place to shop. It's at 12th and Filbert (4 blocks from the PATCO stop at 8th and Market). Click here to see a map of Philly depicting the PATCO line stops (and here to see the large, detailed map)

MUNCHIES:

If you get tired of dorm food, there are some local muncherias so you can grab a quick bite:

A Nice Little Bar (M-F 11am-2am, weekends 12pm-3am). It's one and a half blocks from here at 120 N. Broadway (964-2448). Don't let the name fool you; they have good food with decent atmosphere (American fare, Caribbean fare, Spanish fare, sandwiches, and chicken).

Broadway Eddie's Celebrity Food Court (Mon-Sat 8am-6pm). They're four blocks away at 201 S. Broadway (541-8888). Ample portions at decent prices, sit down or take-out. (Chinese, grilled and other sandwiches, burgers)

Campus Salad Bar. (M-F 10am-6pm). They're literally next door to the housing building at 319 Friends Street (756-0444). They have a nice little salad bar here (pay by the pound), and a tasty collection of sandwiches, tortilla wraps, burgers and fries. They run specials so you can get a good sized meal at a reasonable price.

Candy Cash and Carry (6:30-6:30pm, 307 Market Street, 966-7085). In addition to being a small grocery store, this place makes hoagies, subs, and sandwiches. They also serve fresh ice cream.

China Bowl Takeout Restaurant (M-F 11am-11pm, no deliveries). It's nearby at 645 Market (365-1122). You can eat there, but most folks do the takeout option (Chinese fare).

Crown Fried Chicken (every day 10am-4am, NO deliveries). The y're about six blocks away at 309 Broadway (963-2150). The chicken is quite good and their mini sweet potato pies are the best!. (fried chicken, BBQ ribs, burgers, fish-n chips, fried shrimp)

Fu Hing (every day 11am-2am, no deliveries). They're a couple blocks away at 429 Broadway (757-0599). (Chinese fare)

George's Restaurant (M-F 6am-4pm, Sat 6am-1pm). Up around the corner at 223 Market (757-0015). (Standard diner fare, platters, sandwiches, and a few Greek dishes)

Johnny's Pizza (M-F 9am-5pm, deliveries until 4:30pm). They're just around the corner at 513 Market (right in front of city hall, 338-0444). They have different college student specials each term, so call and they'll fill you in. I've heard that the food is great. (pizza, sandwiches, subs, Italian fare, salad bar)

Little Slice of NY (Mon-Sat 10am-11pm, deliveries). A whole half of block away at 120 N. 3rd (964-0404). The food's pretty good, but stay away from the Spaghetti & Meatballs. (pizza, Italian fare, sandwiches, salads)

Louie's Truck (Mon-Thur 7am-7pm, Fri 7am-4pm). His truck is parked across the street from the law school. I hear that you'd better stay away from his BLT's because they are absolutely addictive! (hot dogs, sandwiches, soup, soft pretzels, beverages)

Marcello's Pizza (every day, 11am-11pm, makes deliveries). They're about 20 minutes from campus (3112 Mt. Ephraim), but they deliver (962-0070). (pizza, sandwiches, Italian fare)

McDonalds. Over on Haddon Ave and Federal. You know their routine.

Mexico Lindo (every day 9am-9pm). It's quite a drive from here (3521 Federal, 365-9004), but it's good, authentic Mexican food, right down to the Oaxaca cheese.

Nora's Pizza (every day 3pm-3am, makes deliveries). They're not really walking distance (1524 Mt. Ephraim), but they're one of the few places that will deliver a pizza at 2:30am while you're studying for that calculus final (338-0404). (pizza, sandwiches, Italian fare, burgers, chicken, and scrumptious Mozzarella sticks)

Penn Pizza (M-F 8:30am-6pm, Sat 9am-5pm, no deliveries to Rutgers). They're on the corner of Federal and Broadway (757-0055). (pizza, sandwiches, Italian fare).

Shirley's Brass Rail. Another local diner, popular for lunch (425 Market, 963-3888). (standard diner fare, platters, sandwiches).

Jordan's Hot Dog Truck (M-F 9am-2pm). His truck is parked right on campus near the bookstore. I hear he has the best coffee around town and I know his hot dogs are great. His grilled chicken sandwich is also a real winner. (hot dogs, sausages, chicken sandwiches, meatball sandwiches, soft pretzels, beverages, other goodies)

The Tavern (10:30am-1am or later). One block away, at 109 5th Street (963-9510). Thursday is Cheep Wings nights; chicken wings are 25? each with a beverage purchase (non-alcoholic included). (sandwiches, seafood, pasta, salads)

TRANSPORTATION:

Patco Subway line: We have two stations near Rutgers. The closest is on 5th and Market (two blocks away), but it closes around midnight and is closed on weekends. After hours, or if you want to increase your chances of having other people around, you'll need to go to the Rand Transportation Center on Broadway between Market and Federal. It's open 24 hours a day. Last time I looked, fares to NJ side destinations were $1.30, Philly side stops were only $1.15. Frequent riders can buy multiple use tickets. Remember, the Rutgers Police Department escort service is happy to take you there and pick you up at night; just call 225-6009 and they'll send someone over..

The Rand Transportation Center also houses the bus systems:

GREYHOUND: If you want to hit New York City for a day, Greyhound is probably your best bet. It's about $40.00  roundtrip and they have many busses leaving and returning daily. It's right around $35 to Washington DC. Click here to search their schedules and fares, and to buy tickets online. (http://www.greyhound.com/)

NJ TRANSIT: NJ Transit operates both local and statewide buses. The local busses can get nearly anywhere you want to go in the county for roughly a buck (it's $1.00 for the first zone, $1.55 if you cross one zone boundary, $1.90 if you cross two zone boundaries, and $2.30 if you cross three zone boundaries). The statewide busses make regular trips to Trenton (where you can catch the train), Atlantic City, the Jersey coast and other places in Jersey. Click here to download schedules in Adobe Acrobat format (http://www.njtransit.com/sf_bus_schedules_all.shtm). A few schedules you might want to check out are #450 (Cherry Hill Mall) and #457 (Moorestown Mall). Click here for their homepage (http://www.njtransit.com/index.jsp) You can call NJ Transit at 1-800-582-5946 for assistance in scheduling trips.

You can walk across the bridge to Philadelphia, but don't dilly dally as they lock the gate around dusk (you wouldn't want to be on the bridge at night anyway). The walk is fun, and I know a bunch of folks who like to jog there.

SOME OTHER GOOD INFO TO KNOW:

ESCORT SERVICE:
The campus Police Department operates an escort service and hopes that you'll use it. They'll even take you to the PATCO Subway station or pick you up from the station and bring you back home. Just call X6009 and they'll send someone right over.

INTERNATIONAL STUDY TRIPS:
Make sure you find out which international study trips will be offered this year. Offered in conjunction with the department of Art, these trips are offered during breaks and count for academic credit. In past years, students have gone to England, Italy, South Africa and other exciting places! Call 225-6176 for more information or click here: http://int-studies.camden.rutgers.edu/

CAMDEN RIVERSHARKS at CAMPBELL'S FIELD:
This ballpark is Rutgers-Camden's largest classroom, but there are no classes held there. Instead, it's a day at the ballgame for you and your friends. While you're there, send my best to Finley the Shark (their mascot). Here's the link to the Riversharks homepage, where you can check out there schedule and buy tickets online: http://www.riversharks.com/

TWEETER CENTER (formerly the E-CENTRE):
Rutgers students are eligible for discount tickets for events at the Tweeter Center (concerts and other fun stuff). And, watch for the Rutgers-Camden email newsletter R.E.A.C.T. and periodic emailings from The Rutgers Raptor for news about free tickets to headliner shows at the Tweeter. You can buy tickets at the IMPACT booth in the Campus Center for many Tweeter Center events.

STATE AQUARIUM:
Make sure you hit the NJ State Aquarium at least once while you're here (it's only a few blocks from campus, click here for more info: http://www.njaquarium.org/). The WOW! exhibit is primarily aimed at kids, but it's lots of fun anyway. Their new attraction is penguins, who are cute as they can be. I also like the shark petting exhibit; it beats spending every Saturday at the library....
