Double majors and major/minor
combinations
Sociology major, criminal
justice minor:
follow the requirements in the catalog
Criminal Justice major, Sociology
minor:
in addition to the 42 credit CJ major, students
must take 18 credits in sociology or anthropology. Only 6 of the 18 credits
in sociology or anthropology may be in criminal justice courses.
Double Major: Sociology and Criminal
Justice:
The double major is described below. However, the easiest way to
understand where you stand is to access the new Double
Major Worksheet that Dr. Meyer has prepared. Double majors should print
out this worksheet and keep it current for advising purposes.
Double majors will take a total of 66 credits as follows:
Classes which count toward both majors:
-
920:207 Introduction to Sociology (3 cr.)
-
920:301 Methods & Techniques of Social Research
(3 cr.)
-
either of the following courses:
-
920:316 Race and Ethnic Minorities or
-
920:332 Social Stratification (3 cr.)
-
3 credits in multicultural or non-western courses
from among the offerings in anthropology and sociology (NOTE: while
you are free to take approved courses from political science, they cannot
be counted towards the sociology major)
Classes which count toward only the CJ major:
-
202:201 Criminal Justice in America (3 cr.)
-
any two of the following three courses:
-
202:202 Police and Policing
-
202:203 Confinement and Corrections (also called
Prisons and Prisoners)
-
202:204 Courts and Criminal Law
-
920:313 Theories of Crime & Delinquency (3 cr.)
-
202:449 Ethics and Policy in Criminal Justice
-
12 credits in crime and/or criminal justice related
courses from the offerings of criminal justice and sociology which count
toward the CJ major
-
3 credits from the approved offerings of philosophy,
political science, social work, or urban studies
Classes which count toward only the SOC major:
-
070:213 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (3
cr.)
-
070:307 Psychological Anthropology (3 cr.) or
920:357 Individual and Society (3cr.)
-
920:325 Sociological Theory (3 cr.)
-
15 additional credits in sociology or anthropology
courses, which count toward the Sociology major [this assumes that the
3 credits taken for the multicultural course for CJ were in either sociology
or anthropology (if they were taken in political science, you will need
an additional sociology elective). Also, Sociology requires at least one
anthropology course taken among its electives, but those who took an anthropology
course to satisfy the multicultural course for CJ can count that course
toward the minimum).
