Down Germantown Avenue
A Visual Introduction to Elijah Anderson's Code of the Street

This twelve minute film, created by Rutgers-Camden students James Flatley and Etienne Jackson in association with Professor Robert Wood, is designed to assist readers of Elijah Anderson's award-winning and widely-read ethnography, Code of the Street: Decency, Violence, and the Moral Life of the Inner City, in visualizing the urban terrain that Anderson describes in his introductory chapter. Anderson leads his readers down Philadelphia's Germantown Avenue as a "cross section of the social ecology of a major American city." The film project grew out of Professor Wood's social stratification course in spring 2004 and was carried out by the students during the 2004-5 academic year. The film was first publicly presented at the Eastern Sociological Society meetings in March 2005 (click here for newsletter article). It was also the subject of a nice article by staff writer Vernon Clark in the Philadelphia Inquirer, which included a related slideshow.
